Artificial flowers are often indistinguishable from real ones, apart from scent. Then again, artificial flowers may be many times larger than actual ones, come in novel colours and even flower type. Artificial flowers are usually placed in interiors, which bring with them their own inventions and styling, so that the terms of artifice are shifting or problematic between flower and setting. The play between which qualities are part of the subject and which are part of the style of picture is a central concern for my work.
Both flowers and settings also decorate a human presence and have symbolic meaning for the person present as token flower-bearer or absent from furniture. These are aspects I hoped to capture. I see this as a minor but worthwhile series.

I have previously dealt with flowers as conveying conventional sentiments in Saying Flowers (2015) and the two themes of sentiment and artifice are separate but run in parallel. Saying Flowers could be artificial, but the emphasis is on conveying a sentiment, while Artificial Flowers may convey feelings, as indicated above, but the emphasis is upon their play upon realism or nature. I see the two series as complementary. This series also draws upon my own experience with adopting artificial flowers as a décor solution.
