The exhibition is my first solo show in seven years, and they have been the most gruelling of my life. Elsewhere I’ve detailed my health issues in 2023-24 and these were followed by a computer hardware glitch that deprived me of access – online and offline, which in turn led to my social media accounts being cancelled through lack of activity and bizarre poltergeist-like events in the house, defying physical laws, a blind collapsed on me, a curtain rail jumped from its fittings before my eyes. Were these things connected? I don’t know. Then I ‘misplaced’ my car for several weeks before miraculously finding it again, at the suggestion of the local police.
All these things contributed to a suicidal despair which I confided to my niece in an email which she then shared with social services, who had me incarcerated in the local hospital for three weeks, even though the hospital’s psychiatric unit promptly cleared me of suicidal thoughts (even though suicide is not a crime). But the stress did induce type-2 diabetes which involved a radical change of life style, I am still dealing with. Upon returning home I found the supernatural events were mercifully much reduced to minor quirks I can handle.
All the time I kept painting, and in an effort to seek exposure and an actual audience (as opposed to a social media audience, which I eventually regained) I applied to the modest One Star Lounge & Gallery, a rental space in West Melbourne. The director, Katy Beale kindly accepted my submission for a two-week run (which is still longer than my last solo show) and chose what I thought were my strongest works, focusing mainly on single full-length figures with other subjects reflecting web origins. I don’t expect to sell anything, I have no following apart from fellow struggling artists, but it is enough to reconnect with them and to have gained the exposure will be enough.

Part two of the group show ‘Don’t Say I Never Warned You When Your Train Gets Lost’ curated by Dr Michael Vale finally appears at the Kingston Arts Gallery in Moorabbin (south eastern suburb of Melbourne).
The show was to have occurred last year, but rolling lockdowns due to the pandemic saw it postponed until now. The gallery is a much larger space than the Stockroom and artists have supplied additional and alternative works for a more impressive display. A revamped flyer, in red and blue slyly nods to Dr Michael Vale’s devoted following of AFL football team The Melbourne Demons, premier in 2021.
The gallery together with Ross Coulter also provided a 3-D animated walk-thru of the show, sadly now deleted.
