18 PAINTINGS ACROSS 15 PRIOR DIGITAL SERIES
This is obviously a second selection made across fifteen preceding series (2015-18) in which painted versions extend issues of form and style. The aim is not of course a slavish duplication in paint of the Photoshop file and for that matter, nor is the Photoshop file merely a photograph. Rather, painting here provides a further, challenging level of stylisation, through interpreting unfamiliar digital graphics effects to photographic sources. Painting deliberately simplifies these, but at the same time condenses form and content, enriching the work.
Even to paint from a straightforward photo-collage offers a range of technical options to distinguish between edges of pictures and edges within pictures, and with that, new considerations of content. With further digital graphics at play, these options are only multiplied and reflect more emphatically upon a painterly vocabulary, to what brush-formed elements may stand for, to how brushwork works as form or content.
