SUPERMARKETING
AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2026
The idea here was basically of marketing child-rearing, or that the supermarket’s product was actually its customers. Supermarket imagery is definitely a web genre, but with a theme of child-rearing, it also crosses over into a revered traditional fine art genre. The Photoshop process in this series stretches the genre further into collage – much like my pre-digital work. It uses the usual tools and filters, but also reorientates details of source imagery to reconstruct content. This gives the series a broader scope than usual – returns my project to its beginnings but can now offer greater nuance to the integration of parts to whole. The series fragments the picture further without abandoning more familiar means of integration. Variety within the series is a feature of the process.
I regard the series as a step forward, both in the kind of genre sampled and in the degree of fragmentation achieved.

In preceding series I’ve felt free to explore the full variety of genres, to pursue quite personal ends, without the need to consider them any further than that. With Supermarketing I sense that variety has now begun to close a little, and that underlying issues, like fiction or fact, role or pose, realism and abstraction, have begun to tighten, confining variety. It remains to be seen whether this continues. I have not run out of themes, but they may start to move closer together. Variety is no longer enough.
